About DuroMax Power Systems

I have found DuroMax to be a very innovative company that’s committed to providing consumers excellent power equipment. It was founded 18 years ago and is still a family-owned and operated business.

The company has a limited number of employees but still generates more than $1.24 million as revenue in sales.

What expanded DuroMax’s name as a symbol of reliability and dependability was the introduction of their low-cost generator model DuroMax 3500XP in 2005, back when generators were still very expensive and troublesome to handle.

They have an extremely talented team of R&D that will probably continue to raise the bar of quality and reliability even higher.

DuroMax Product Categories

Headquartered in California, DuroMax Power Equipment is among the industry leaders in manufacturing portable generators. Their product line included pressure washers, pumps, engines before they burst onto the scene with the Model 3500XP.

The company still produces an assortment of portable power sources that include inverters and conventional generators to power your needs.

They also have several retailers and service centers spread all over the US and Canada to help the customers with the maintenance and warranty issues with ease.

Let’s see how their product, the DuroStar DS10000E, fares individually and in comparison with its competitors.

Features and Ease of Use

The model DS10000E certainly wins the competition against the above-average portable generators of this size in the market but isn’t far behind the best among the lot either.

Let’s take a quick look at all the model features that you’ll get if you ever buy one.

Powerful Engine

The installed engine in this unit is powerful and can handle most of the heavy loads efficiently. Lights, AC, workplace tools, you name it, it can power them all with its 10,000 starting watts and 8,000 running watts.

Extended Run Time

The engine runs for approximately 10.5 hours at 50% load with a full fuel tank. That’s a considerable advantage against its competitors, which do not provide such extended times while producing this much power.

Low Oil Protection

The generator automatically senses that the oil level is low and shuts down to prevent engine damage.

Starting Options

This model features both electric and recoil start options. It starts in one pull if the battery has been discharged, so you do not have to worry about the failure of the electric start.

Large Fuel Tank

The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 8.3 gallons, thus enabling the generator to run for extended periods.

Idle Control

The engine automatically lowers the RPM when low or no power output is utilized to save fuel and reduce the noise. This feature is handy when the power is being used on an intermittent basis.

Full Power Panel

The control panel of this unit includes an oil warning light, voltmeter, circuit breaker and power outlets, power boost, engine switch, and all the connection sockets.

Reduced Noise Level

The quiet mufflers installed on the unit reduce the engine noise, bringing it down to 72 dB. Due to the generator design being an open frame, the noise levels aren’t exceptionally low.

MX2 Technology

This feature helps you get maximum power from both of the receptacles. You’ll have a choice to operate the generator simultaneously at both 120V and 240V or only at 120V with full power.

Compliance

All DuroMax generators, including this one, are as environmentally friendly as possible. All units are fully EPA and CARB compliant. This engine can be bought and sold in all 50 states without any legal issues.

Metal Construction

The generator has an all-metal construction. It has tough built to last longer, even in rough places like woods or job sites.

Output Ports

The generator’s control panel is equipped with two 120V, 20A household outlets, one 120V/240V, 30A Twist Lock outlet, one 120V, 30A Twist Lock outlet, and 1 120/240V 50A Heavy Duty outlet.

Engine Specs for DuroMax Generators

Now I am going to talk about the engine specifications of this generator.

For its bigger generators, DuroMax generally uses two types of engines. One is 439 cc, and the other one is 500 cc. The company uses a 439 cc engine for this generator, and we’ll focus on its specification for now.

What Engine Is Used in DuroStar DS10000E Generator?

The engine model used in manufacturing the model DS10000E is the 439 cc DuroMax OHV Engine, XP18HP. It has a max power output of around 10.0 kW and a speed of 3600RPM.

Here are its salient features.

  • EPA Compliant
  • Single Cylinder
  • 4-Stroke OHV
  • Air Cooled
  • Non-Contact Transistor Ignition
  • Electric/Recoil Start
  • Low Oil Shut-Off

You can find the engine’s manual here.

Fuel Type and Efficiency

The fuel you can use to run this engine is common unleaded gasoline. The exact fuel specifications are:

  • ≥87 octane, ≤10% ethanol

Fuel Tank Capacity

The gasoline capacity of the fuel tank of this generator is approximately 8.3 liters (or 2.2 gallons).

Why Is Gasoline Used for This Generator Unit?

As with most of the other generators, gasoline is used in this generator as well. It could also have been a dual-fuel or just any other fuel type like propane, but gasoline was probably selected due to its widespread use and ease of availability.

Benefits of Using Gasoline

  • Gasoline produces more energy per unit of fuel than propane and natural gas; hence, it can be ideal for running the generator in low fuel and high power requirements.
  • Gasoline is considerably cheaper than propane if we compare the cost of per kW generation. That makes it more efficient in terms of economic values. On the flip side, natural gas is even cheaper than gasoline but gives out less energy per unit than gasoline, hence becoming impractical.
  • Gasoline is readily available and extremely common. You won’t have to venture far to have your fuel tank filled. Propane may only be available at some specific locations in your vicinity.

How Long Will The Engine Run On Full Tank?

According to the industry standards for inverter generators with variable engine speeds, fuel consumption ratings are done at 25% load.

However, this generator unit keeps running for about 10.4 hours straight at a 50% load cap with a full fuel tank (8.2 gals of gasoline).

Although the load curve graph and fuel consumption are not linear, it is still somewhat close enough. So I guess it’d run for about 14-15 hours at 25% load.

Noise Levels

One of the features that the customers now look for is the reduced noise level. If a company wants its portable generators to stay ahead of the line, the importance of noise reduction can never be underestimated.

I have to say that the noise levels are not much of a strong point for this generator. The design, being an open frame, has resulted in the sound level being significantly higher than the closed frame competitors.

During my research, I came across multiple generators that were quieter than the DuroStar DS10000E.

Let’s know exactly how loud it can get during the operation.

Variable Load Noise Level

The 439 cc 4-Stroke engine operates at about 72 – 85 dB at variable loads. That is considerably louder than a normal conversation. The Idle Control helps to reduce the noise levels by slowing down the engine during periods of low or no power usage.

Even though the quiet mufflers also help reduce noise, I would still consider this model louder than bearable when it is running anywhere nearby. Guess you’ll have to trade-off the low noise level with higher power output.

Full Load Noise Level

At full load, this generator can go up to 90 dB at full power. Not exactly impressive.

Noise Reduction Technology – Comparison with Other Models

DuroMax has focused on the performance and built quality specs of this generator model rather than on side features like noise cancellation.

I’ll mention a few names and models here just for the sake of comparison so that you could go for any other model if low noise tops the list of your preferences.

Louder Models

  • All Power America APGG10000GL Portable Generator has a noise level of noise level is around 76 dB, which is already quite loud.
  • A-iPower SUA12000EC generator operates at 78 dB.

Quieter Models

  • Pulsar PG10000B16 Portable Dual Fuel Generator has an average noise level of 67 dB.
  • WEN DF1100T 11000W Dual Fuel Generator has an average noise level of 70 dB while running at variable load.
  • Honda EB10000 9000/10000W Portable Generator is rated at a noise of 71 dB.

It’s a fact that the portable generators get louder and louder as you go up the power scale. So you shouldn’t be surprised at the noise output of this generator.

However, if you want a quieter model, you can check the ones I have listed above.

Portability

Portability is extremely important if you intend to use this generator on the go. The weight of this engine is comparable with its competitors, lagging behind some and leading a few others.

Let’s find out the compactness and weight of the generator so that you may know if it’s portable enough for you.

Dry Weight

The dry weight of this DuroMax generator unit is 218 lbs. / 98.9 kg.

Wet Weight

The wet weight or curb weight of this generator is about 288.8 lbs. / 131 kg (that includes Engine Oil = 1.1 liters and full gasoline tank = 8.2 gals).

Compactness

The model DS10000E has average compactness. As this generator has a bigger power output and size than the smaller generators, you’ll have to place it in open spaces before running. Its dimensions are:

  • Length: 28 in / 71.1 cm
  • Width: 22.0 in / 55.9 cm
  • Height: 23 in / 58.4 cm

Ergonomics

The generator does not come with a pre-installed wheel kit. However, it is included with the package and you’ll have to install it by yourself. Such a heavy generator has to be portable for ease of transportation. And the wheels and a foldable handle allow it to be moved around easily.

The wheel kit and handle installation guide have also been provided on page 19 in the owner’s manual so you can easily do it yourself without any hassle.

Portability – Comparison with Other Models

This model is compact and comparable with other engines of the same kind, there’s no doubt about that. The overall dry weight of this engine is within the average range and is far lighter than one of the heaviest Honda generators, the EB10000, which weighs 403 lb.

Here’s how a few similar models fare in dimensions and weight in comparison.

Warranty

DuroMax Power Equipment gives a 3-year parts warranty for residential users and a 1-year warranty for commercial users or unusually heavy use.

The warranty does not cover the normal wear and tear and unauthorized modifications of the generator. You will also be responsible for delivery and freight charges while claiming any parts or the engine warranty.

Commonly Known Issues

There are a few common issues that I came across while doing my research on this generator. I’ll mention them below as a heads up so you could have a handy solution ready if you are going to buy this generator.

Wheels Flatten With Time

The issue of wheels flattening that’s specific to this generator pops up during its long-term use. The wheels included with this engine are made entirely of rubber instead of being the inflatable ones.

If you keep the engine in one place for a long time, the wheels start getting flat, making the movement of the generator very difficult.

Servicing and Repair Are Costly

The repairmen and the maintenance cost of this generator are higher as compared to other models once its warranty period expires.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s go through a few common queries of the potential customers who want to know more about a few features of this generator.

What type of oil does the generator use?

The engine oil recommended by DuroMax is SAE 10W-30. The viscosity of synthetic oil varies with regions and temperatures.
* 30W Engine Oil for temperatures above 40°F
* 10W-30 Engine Oil for temperatures between 0°F – 40°F
* Synthetic 5W-30 Engine Oil for all temperature ranges
Also, ensure that you are not using any 2-stroke gasoline engine oils or oils with additives. They will shorten the engine life due to not having enough lubrication.

How loud is the model DS10000E as compared to other generators?

This generator model is pretty loud in my opinion, even louder than it has been advertised. It has a lower noise level of 72 dB.
If we look at other generators, we will see that most of them have a high sound level. That’s because this generator and its competitors all have an open-frame design.
For more information about exact noise levels, I have mentioned a few generators in the review above.

What type of fuel does this model use?

This model uses regular gasoline as fuel. It isn’t dual fuel so there is no option to use any other kind of fuel.
Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane number of 87. Do not use the oil/gasoline mixture or old gas.
To add to your knowledge, using high-octane gasoline would extend your engine’s life and decrease the maintenance required for the generator by producing fewer byproducts during combustion.

How many gallons of gas does it hold and how long does it run?

The fuel tank’s capacity is 8.2 gallons. Just ensure that you are not filling it right to the very top to avoid any spillage. Just leave a minimum of 1.5 inches of open space to allow the gas to expand and vapors to saturate.
At 50% load, the runtime is about 10.4 hours. I have also mentioned the runtimes at other loads as well in the review above if you want to check them out.

Is the wheel kit included or do I have to buy it separately?

The wheel kit is included in the packaging of the generator but isn’t pre-installed. You don’t have to buy it separately. But you will have to install it yourself following the instructions in the owner’s manual.

What are the shipping weight and shipping box size?

The overall package weight of the generator unit is 228 lbs. That’s 10 lbs more than the overall dry weight of just the generator unit.
The dimensions of the box of the generator packing given on the official website are not correct (the given dimensions are 31 x 23 x 31 inches. The engine’s dimensions are 29 x 30 x 26 inches). But I’d assume a couple of inches increase on each side to make up the shipping box size.

Does this inverter come with an hour meter? Or does the control panel also show the total overall run time?

For logging the total number of hours, I’d suggest that you use a third-party hour meter as there is no display or meter installed on the generator that would tell you about its lifetime usage hours.

Can I use the output power to charge my laptop and phone?

The inverter technology has not been incorporated in this generator. So you will not be getting a pure sine wave output. The total harmonic distortion may be high enough due to fluctuations to fry any connected sensitive electronics.
So I would suggest that you do not connect your mobile phone or laptop, as there is a chance of equipment damage due to unclean power.

Is there a fuel conversion kit for this generator?

DuroStar does not sell any natural gas conversion kit along with this inverter. The engine has been designed to run on gasoline only.
You will need to visit the market and talk to an expert or the company’s customer support to know more about conversion kits. But make sure not to tamper with the engine yourself without any knowledge or confirmation as you may get your warranty voided with any unauthorized modifications.
I have included the contact details of DuroMax’s customer support team in the review above.

Pros and Cons
